Telangana Congress MPS to quit today
Pushed to a corner on the issue of submitting their resignations in view of the 'discouraging' attitude of the Congress on the demand for Telangana, the seven T-Congress MPs on Tuesday decided to submit conditional resignation letters to Congress president Sonia Gandhi. This was decided after a 10-hour meeting here on Tuesday at the residence of senior leader K Keshava Rao. With AICC functionary Vayalar Ravi urging them not to take the extreme step and inviting them for talks, the MPs decided to fly to Delhi on Wednesday morning and hand over their conditional resignation letters to Sonia Gandhi. "We cannot continue in the Congress. Since our own party has disappointed us on the Telangana issue, we are sending our resignation letters to the party president with a request to forward them to the Speaker if she is not in a position to resolve the issue," Keshava Rao, who presided over the meeting, told the media. The seven T-MPs, who threatened to resign, include Madhu Yaskhi, Manda Jagannatham, G Vivek, Ponnam Prabhakar, S Rajaiah, Gutha Sukhender Reddy and Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy. Even though united in the matter of resignation, the MPs were clearly divided on their future course of action. Nizamabad MP Madhu Yaskhi said that the T-decision was put on hold due to pressure from Jaganmohan Reddy's 'agents'. "The delay is temporary," he said, adding that their participation in the T-movement will not be election-oriented. "Our aim is to achieve Telangana before 2014," the Nizamabad MP said. Bhongir MP Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy said that he would join the movement led by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (T-JAC). However, Karimnagar MP Ponnam Prabhakar clarified that except for realising Telangana, there is no other motive behind the resignations. "We have no intension to topple the UPA government," he said.
